Grays, oranges, nature inspire latest design trends

This season’s design trends were recently previewed in High Point, N.C., at the dozens of showrooms that make the city the center of the design industry. On a recent trip to the spring High Point Market for home furnishings, I viewed the latest in trends and colors and am eager to share these designs for your home.
Natural elements
The use of nature-inspired elements continues to be strong, with designs and materials that echo what is found in nature. Examples of this are found in driftwood accent tables and a weathered wood cocktail table from Bernhardt Furniture in the above slideshow. Shell lamps are also popular.
Rough luxe
This trend refers to pieces that maintain a classic style while incorporating more casual textures and weathered finishes.
Garden stools
Ceramic garden stools are interesting and unexpected pieces that work well as an accent both indoors and out. A garden stool in the right scale can act as an accent table and break up a room decor that may have too many wood pieces. They are available in a myriad of sizes, shapes and finishes. I love the wall of garden stools at the High Point Market, shown above. Garden stools galore!
Tangerine is tops
The Pantone color of the year as labeled by the Color Marketing Group is Tango Tangerine and is widely used in everything from textiles and furnishings to accessories, lamps and rugs. A little bit of this bright color (pillows, accessories) can add punch to an otherwise dull room.
Shades of gray
Gray is another color that is dominant this year. It is the new neutral! It works well when combined with small doses of brighter shades such as fuchsia, tangerine or citron.
Upholstered headboards
Upholstered headboards create a fabulous focal point for a master bedroom and can be customized in shape and covering to match any style of decor. I love the headboard in the above slideshow from the Bernhardt Furniture showroom at High Point. It’s also a great example of how the color gray is being used.

I remember this setting from the Bernhardt showroom. An interesting mix of elements from the earth with elements carved and shaped by craftsmen.
